The next week

Marcus was whining. "I've got to go back to Grantville, Julius. I want to see her. It has been more than two weeks since I left, and she is not returning my messages. I've heard nothing from her!"

His cousin shook his head. "No, Marcus, we need you here. And stop whining—you are not five years old any longer. We are businessmen now. With a real business. And a problem. A series of problems. We must get this thing up and running as soon as possible." Julius Fickler leaned back in his chair at the Berghof café. They were back at their old meeting place, a mound of papers and books strewn across the table.

"Was the leak back with the bankers?" He was trying hard not to whine, but he was not fully thinking about the radio station right now. And he was in a whining mood. A lovesick whining mood.

His cousin again shook his head. "No, they insist it was always under lock and key, and my uncle swears on his mother's grave that everyone on his end is completely trustworthy. He handpicked the team. There is no way it came from them; they do this sort of thing all the time with much bigger opportunities. Just think about how some of these men are invested in the oil fields. Did any of that information leak out?" Julius looked around him to make sure none of the white aproned waiters were listening. He continued in a hushed tone. "But there are other issues. We have no place for an antenna!"

"What?" Marcus raised his voice, and the bored waiters looked at them. "I thought we were going to put it on the Dom. It is the highest point in town. It is in the plan." He pointed at the ever-present ledgers.

Julius shushed him. "We can't put our antenna there."

"Fuck. Did they beat us to it? Wait—don't tell me, it was in our business plan. Of course they beat us to it."

"Yes. And no. It is worse than that. It turns out that the Stift for the Lutheran Church here in town is not as excited about up-time tech as we are. In fact, they are downright reactionary. They want nothing to do with it."

"Have we tried Gericke? He has connections with the Church. And Uncle is connected just as well—they have been donating money like madmen to rebuild and repair the old churches. Surely that is worth something to get access!"

Julius shook his head. "We tried, starting back when you were in Grantville. Somehow the negotiations blew up. I do not know what happened. But all the Lutheran churches are off the table. We have been looking at every church in the city, but the answer is the same everywhere because of the Stift."

Marcus snapped his fingers. "Wait! What about the old Catholic abbey? They have a church and steeples. Not as tall, but we could use them!"

"Too late."

"What do you mean, too late?"

"Too late. Someone has already leased both of the towers, and they are in far better shape than Magdeburg Dom.
